“You can believe in whatsoever you like, but the truth remains the truth, no matter how sweet the lie may taste” – Michael Bassey Johnson
I have to confess, I’d given up. When I started this website on the day a racist sunset in the west was confirmed as the 45th President of the United States, I was purposeful, determined to use this platform to fight against the rising tide of populist, racist, venal cults of personality that were ascending to power the world over. Donald J Trump was of course the ‘bigliest’ of them all, the Pussy Grabbing President and unabashed racist whose key skill seemed to be exploiting the fears (and stupidity) of poor, white Americans. But this isn’t news and you don’t a history lesson from me. Besides, that day isn’t one that too many people remember fondly so let’s move on.
Looking back, I often think that I was too arrogant, thinking that my opinion was going to cause the slightest of ripples in the subsequent ocean of lies, abuse of power, sexism, racism, lies, homophobia, bribery, sex scandal(s), lies, idiocy, illiteracy, narcissism, lies – okay, I’ll stop, I know the list is endless. The point is, I made it clear that silence and acceptance of the increasingly abnormal were not options. Change was always painful and sacrifice, its inevitable bedfellow. Therefore, resistance was necessary and as such it was critical not to become fatigued and resigned to the dystopian nightmare developing around us. I tried, really, really hard. But then, one day in June 2017 as I was about to post, “Which Trump is the Worst?” (it’s Ivanka), I just couldn’t be bothered. It felt pointless and I was passionless. I became exactly what I feared and proselytised against.
I’m really sorry. That’s my bad. It won’t happen again.
So much has happened since I was last here. Against a backdrop of the Trump Crime Family living lavish lifestyles at taxpayers’ expense (Douche jnr shooting a rare Mongolian sheep, the entire Trump family at Buckingham Palace) and maximising personal fortunes via the presidency (the hotels, Ivanka the Terrible getting 5 trademarks in China), President Covfefe has ensured that America is indeed ‘sick of winning’. Or is that just sick?
Here’s just a few examples of Trumpian norms. Michael Cohen. Stormy Daniels. Sexual assault accusations. Hurricane Maria and throwing paper towels to Hispanics. Abandoning the Kurds. Kids in cages, again of Hispanic descent. Charlottesville and ‘very fine people on both sides’. The summit in Finland where he was Putin’s bitch’ defending HIM and not his own intelligence agencies. Impeachment. Advising Americans to have a bleach milkshake or infra-red enema to cure Covid-19. Attacking peaceful protestors with tear gas, truncheons, police brutality and threats. The 18,000 lies (and counting). It’s been an incessant assault on the principle of decency and basic humanity, let alone the rule of law ad the U.S constitution. And so on to today and yet another long overdue reckoning on racial equality and police brutality.
Ahmaud Arbery. Breonna Taylor. George Floyd.
And the rest, countless in their numbers yet weighing down on history in their insistence that justice can be, must be, and finally will be done. The racial injustice and underpinning white supremacist culture that it empowers ALL OVER THE WORLD finally apparent to ordinary, everyday, regular white people. The global pandemic had already created a common thread running through humanity with every human being susceptible to contracting the deadly virus although, unsurprisingly the poor, vulnerable and minority & refugee communities – again, ALL OVER THE WORLD – were and are most at risk of dying from Covid-19.
Irrespective of that and despite the key mitigations against spread of the disease being social distancing, people appear to have been more communal than in generations. Most of us have been stuck in self-imposed silos, sharing and watching the same things on social media in an increasingly vague attempt to keep the nascent boredom at bay. We were all free of the everyday distractions which tend to drown out the viscerally painful news of a Tamir Rice. Or Trayvon Martin, even though they were babies. We watched Philando Castile get murdered in front of his wife and child. But the noise, the reality television, the bullshit from the bully pulpit and the genuine lack of awareness of the extent of racial inequity conspired to diminish the actual suffering of black people in the eyes of fair-minded white people. But the noise is quiet now so we have time to shut up, think and react to what we see and hear in a truer way than ever before.
And so, when we all watched a man being tortured to death for 8 minutes and 46 seconds the reaction was perhaps understandable. But on a personal level, I have to thank Herr Drumpf.
Like a racist badger trapped in a corner or in his case, a bunker, he is attacking, unable to reconcile with the notion that there are white people who truly want change along with minorities of every stripe. Their friends, their contemporary music, their food – all of these things and more are an inextricable part of who they are. They are mostly young and actually BELIEVE in equality and fairness. The bloated POTUS can’t, won’t or is incapable of seeing this. Actually, that’s bullshit. He’s a senile idiot who thinks staring directly in to a solar eclipse will give you the best view of it. His decision to call out the military and commend the brutalisation of unarmed citizens were the actions of a coward masquerading as a strong leader. His subsequent choice to take the diametrically opposite view of two-thirds (at least) of his countrymen and promote the idea of ‘protecting history’ when discussing the removal of confederate iconography is a further demonstration of his imbecilic, racist impulses. And an increasing number of Americans are seeing that the emperor has no clothes on.
Oh, and of course the fact that he is ostensibly trying to kill as many of his countrymen as possible with his insistence that Covid-19 is a thing of the past is a further illustration of his incalculable idiocy. But that’s for another day and another post. It’s for all of this and more that I have come to a reluctant personal realisation. I have come to realise that I am thankful to Sunburnt Stalin, I am grateful that this wheezing, racist, venal and mendacious twunt has been true to his philosophy of narcissistic solipsism and indulged all his racist, sexist fantasies as policy. He has been the fuel that has kept the fire of #BLM protests going all over the planet. His indifference to the health and wellbeing of his citizens is the catalyst that is expediting change and localised police reform even now. And his obvious stupidity will increasingly highlight that he is a danger to the America and the world at large.
So, thanks Agolf Twitler. I know now that America is ready to fight you in November even if – sorry, when – you try to cheat your way to victory. Gotta go and brush my teeth. The thought of the wannabe Emperor Trump with no clothes on – I think I threw up in my mouth a little bit…
